KVPY

KVPY, which is an abbreviation for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana is an all India scholarship examination to find out the best talent in the field of Science. KVPY aims at identifying students who have an aptitude for Science and Research and encouraging them to choose these fields as their careers.

KVPY was started in the year 1999 by Department of Science and Technology (which is also the nodal agency for this exam) to nurture the identified exceptional talent at the right age in order to aid Research and Development in the country. Students who are identified through KVPY are provided generous fellowships and contingency grant for a period of 5 years or up to the pre Ph.D. level, whichever is earlier. Department of Science and Technology has further entrusted the responsibility of conducting the exam and managing the KVPY programme to Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore who in turn has set up a management as well as a National Advisory Committee or NAC to oversee smooth implementation of the whole programme. Summer camps across the prestigious and reputed institutes all over India are also organised to boost up the morale of KVPY fellows.

Scholarship Amount:

  • For under graduates, the KVPY scholarship amount is ₹ 5000 per month. Annual contingency grant is ₹ 20000.
  • For post graduates, the KVPY scholarship amount is ₹ 7000 per month. Annual contingency grant is ₹ 28000.

Structure:

KVPY exam has been divided into three streams- SA, SX and SB. SA stream is for students who are enrolled in class XI and have science subject. SX stream is for students who are enrolled in class XII and have science subject while the stream SX is for students who are enrolled in under graduate/UG programme in basic sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology leading to B.Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math. Or integrated M.Sc. / M.S.

Eligibility:

  • Students appearing for SA stream must have scored 75% in aggregate in Science and Mathematics in class X board examination.
  • Students appearing for SX stream must have scored 75% in aggregate in Science and Mathematics in class X board examination and must score 60% in aggregate in Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Mathematics in class XII board examination
  • Students appearing for SB stream must have scored 60% in aggregate in Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Mathematics in class XII board examination and must score 60% in the Ist year final examination of Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math. Or integrated M.Sc. / M.S.
  • A relaxation of 10% is applicable for all the streams for SC/ST/PwD students.

KYPY is an aptitude test having questions from Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology)  and Mathematics.

Selection:

Students on the basis of their performance in the written exam are called for an interview at different venues across the country. Interview is the final stage of the selection process and the decision of selection committee is final and binding on every aspirant.
